This is so much more that James Madison! Yes, they have some great Madison material, but it is the "other stuff" that really adds to the experience. You enter into a small gift shop and where you pay the admission. More than reasonably priced! The next room has an area where the exhibits change.
On you right is a very well-done room which covers slavery in the area and a wall with much material on the history of people of color in Orange. That leads to a very small area on indigenous people but adds to the experience.
The largest room covers Madison and the other Virginia born presidents from the early days of our nation.
They have a wide variety of early automobiles, farm equipment, other items of interest and a 1700's house that sits in the center!
This was my second visit, and this was a group of almost 50 adults. The staff did an excellent job. The members of our group very much enjoyed our visit.

My wife and I visited here on April 28, 2023. It's a nice little museum and well worth a visit. The staff person Bethany was wonderful.

Our tour of what we thought was going to be a quickie museum trip, turned into an outstanding wonderful surprise! The day before, we had toured Madison's home, Montpelier, and came away so disappointed (it was quite horrific, and expensive).
Hoping to salvage our visit to the area, we checked with the Madison Museum in Orange, and found that they were open. It was delightful!
The folks in attendance were knowledgeable, friendly, and provided so much information about the various rooms and exhibits (especially the agriculture room and the Black History room).
An added bonus is a plethora of information about President, General Zachary Taylor, who was born in Orange, VA, and was a Cousin to James Madison.
Overall, this museum visit was absolutely delightful, and well worth our 2-day stay in the area. And, by the way, the local folks and shops are pleasant, welcoming, and are quick to answer any questions about the area, and the Madison/Taylor families.

Interesting and informative. Well worth the visit. Educational and well organized. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommend especially if you are a history buff.

It’s bigger than it looks from the street and is a very good small-town museum that’s well worth a stop while you’re in Orange. The exhibits on James Madison and his cousin, Zachary Taylor, are very well done. The rest of the museum, including the Hall of Agriculture and Transportation are equally as good and includes a full-size house that has been moved onsite. The staff are well informed and very helpful.
Bizarrely, however, this museum has two websites online: a dot-org one that appears not to have been updated in years, looks like it was designed by someone’s nephew who knows about computers, and also advertises term paper-writing services for college students, and a dot-net one that is head and shoulders above the older one. Why the old one even exists is a mystery to me, but it doesn't serve the museum well if you stumble upon it as I did.

Looks like I owe you two apologies. (1) the embarrassing amount of time it took to look at TripAdvisor, and (2) the old website. It is "owned" by GoDaddy. When the individual who crafted the site died, GoDaddy would not let us access the site or delete it because we did not have the webmaster's credit card information.
I hope you can return and enjoy our outdoor "Charters of Freedom" exhibit that will be constructed in April 2022.

Stayed at a Inn near Orange and had a few hours to burn before heading home and happened upon this gem! Highly recommended! Planned on only an hour and ended up staying 2 1/2 hrs. A ton to read. The docent was very knowledgeable and friendly! A must do!

Typical of small-town museums, this one has a bit of everything. We had a great time poking around and learning more about the local history. The docents were super-helpful.

Now open on Sundays. An historical look back on Orange County and President Madison. Learned that James Madison and Zachary Taylor were cousins. Enjoyable-$6 admission. Allow about 2 hours. Located in downtown Orange. Recommend it.👍

Thank you for your review. We are in a small town and the museum is a 1930s automotive dealership and repair building; so, not the "prettiest" of buildings. Very pleased that you enjoyed your visit and hope that you will return again when in the area. Best Wishes for 2020.

This is a rather eclectic collection of Madison and Taylor items, plus a hodge-podge of other items tied to Orange, VA. If you have read much about Madison or have taken the tour of Madison's estate in Montpelier, there won't be a lot of new Madison information, but it is worth 30-60 minutes to stroll through and learn more about the area.

Thank you for taking the time to post about your visit with us. I believe I was away from the Museum during your visit and hope that you enjoyed Mr. Matthes' vast political and historical knowledge.
While we offer a comprehensive review of James and Dolley Madison (with many artifacts) there is quite a bit more to enjoy - as you saw yourself. 6 of the 8 Virginia-born presidents are represented; Pre-contact and Native American exhibit; Black History exhibit; large Hall of Agriculture and Transportation, and our temporary exhibit space that currently features the American Silk Mill local, national and global history.
I hope you enjoyed your visit in Orange and will come again when you have the time.
