Have wanted to go here for over 30 years. When I saw that Island Opportuntiy Charters out of Bellingham was running a boat there, I signed up right away. The boat took us there and dropped us off for 4 hours. It was plenty of time to see Snoring Bay, Fossil Bay, and look at cool fossils, have lunch, and hike. One of the most breathtaking places I have ever been.

Hard to get to, but worth the trip. Fossil beds (leave them in place), tranquil camping. Superb views. Salish Sea at tis best.

Reed was an excellent guide! We enjoyed th interesting geology sandstone formations on Sucia as much as the sea life. Weather was good so got to kayak around entire island.

We took the boat from Orcas Island. Bring your camping gear and kayaks. Sucia has little bays and inlets great for paddling. Wonderful trails around the island.

We enlisted Outer Island Excursions (see separate review on them) for a kayak tour around the island. This island is a short power boat trip across from the marina at the north end of Orcas Island. Take a power boat over there - save yourself a lot of paddling on open water. Virtually the entire island is part of the State Park. There are restroom facilities and fresh water in the park (multiple spots). Aside from a dock in Fossil Bay and moorings for large boats there and a couple other bays, there are no other facilities on the island. Bring your own food and firewood, and pack out everything you pack in -- except for your pee and poop. The island is a popular spot for sailboats and other pleasure boats to anchor in its protected bays and coves. It is also popular with campers. Lots of wildlife inhabit the shoreline. On our kayak trip around the island, we saw harlequin ducks (hundreds), oyster catchers (dozens), many harbor seals, great blue herons, sea stars, Dungeness crabs, and a couple of bald eagles. The sandstone rock formations at various points along the shoreline are outstanding, as are the "China Caves" in one of the bays. (The caves are reachable on foot from various points on the island.) [Note: the trail we used to get to the caves had a pretty serious wasp nest obstructing our pathway. We got past it, but not before two of our party were stung by the wasps -- but not seriously injured, Hiker be warned!] There are plentiful trees on the island -- Douglas firs and western red cedars and madronas are common. Overall, this is a gem of a state park for outdoorsy types. Highly recommended.

We used the park mooring ball in Fossil Bay and enjoyed the scenery and excellent sunset. Several of our group went ashore for a short time to explore. I would like to spend more time hiking here.

of favorite islands. Beautiful place - good hiking, water was cold but swim-able (sort of).
Moorings available - no services except "out houses". The Water Taxi (Deer Harbor Charters) was great - knowledgeable, friendly, informative Captain. A little pricey but worth it.

We had a great late-season off-the-grid weekend here in mid September. We had Outer Island Adventures drop us off from Orcas at 4:30 on Saturday with two kayaks and our camping gear, then they returned to pick us up at 4:30 on Monday. There were very few people camping on the island, and only a handful of boats anchored in each of the bays. Beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. We saw three families of river otters in the ocean (not sea otters!) and scores of seals with this season's pups. Of course, the first big storm of the season decided to roll in while we were there, so it made for a very blustery couple of nights. We hung out in the yacht club shelter in Fossil Bay with the doors closed for about 4 hours on Sunday to try to get out of the wind. Very glad that the shelter was there! The running water spigots (which are about to be turned off for the season) were so nice to have, and the composting toilets are actually some of the nicest, cleanest outhouses I've ever seen. We kayaked from Fox Cove to Shallow Bay, portaged across to Echo Bay, then continued across to the Scattered Islands, had lunch in Ewing Cove, and then crossed Echo Bay south of the Fingers to round Johnson Point and back into Fossil Bay. There was some spooky current cutting across Johnson Point, but other than that the kayaking was easy even in the driving rain. As far as campsites go, there doesn't seem to be any kind of map that shows where the numbered sites are located, which is either frustrating or part of the charm of the place, depending on how you look at it. We stayed in #25, which was the last site up on the little bluff to the southwest of Fox Cove. It was awesome, exposed on the bluff above the beach, with beautiful sunset views - but it was a wind tunnel from hell, so don't stay there if it is windy at all. Two other primo sites we spotted on our hikes were #26 and #27 in Shallow Bay South - totally isolated from each other, about 1/4 mile apart, each right on the beach with a private restroom! Of these, #26 looked better to me but either would be very nice and while they don't have the dramatic bluff views of #25, they would also be much more protected from the wind. The map shows two roughly parallel trails that run up through the center of the island to Shallow Bay, and #26 is at the dead-end of the westernmost of these two parallel trails. Big caveat though - there does not appear to be water spigots within a convenient distance of Shallow Bay South, so be prepared to haul water if you stay there. Overall, we had a blast on this jewel of the San Juans! Off season is spectacularly quiet too.

Planning on taking a small ferry to Sucia on Labor day weekend, most likely on Sunday. Do I have any hope on finding somewhere to camp?
Đã viết vào 17 tháng 8, 2016
Yes! Even when busy there tend to be lots of available campsites. They aren't all necessarily clustered in one place and if you pack light enough that you can hike a bit you'll definitely be good! There's lots of camping at Fossil Bay too (in all directions around bay) and this is much closer to the dock where you will likely be dropped off.

I don't see anywhere to make reservations for 2 people camping, do the sites fill up quickly around the end of August?
Đã viết vào 13 tháng 7, 2016
The campsites are all first come, first served. They have never filled up in the history of the park.

Are there kayak tours to sucia from orcas/east sound?
Đã viết vào 20 tháng 5, 2016
There are several companies that offer kayak tours or kayak rentals. Outer Island Expeditions and Shearwater Kayaking both offer kayak tours from Orcas Island taking a powerboat to Sucia and then dropping you off to paddle around the island with a guide. Outer Island also offers a Sucia Ferry and kayak rentals for Sucia. Anacortes Kayak Tours offers multi-day kayak trips around Sucia, Matia, and Patos.
