Two great caves to check out. My mom who is 77 struggled with the rocky terrain and the stairs down are really steep but you can go into the caves just a short way or push further in. Definitely bring a flashlight or headlamp and wear good shoes. Really cool caves and no charge. We visited on the same day as Rainbow Falls as they are close together.

Accessing this from the ground level is no joke but I’m very glad we did. The 20-something went farther in with the tour but even the more open entry areas are stunning.
Crawling/climbing required but definitely a bucket list item!

Amazing!!worth the detour. Thanks to the hilo lion club for the facilities and to provide flashlight. People, make sure you place them back and share it with other, don't need one per person.

Our family ended up spending much more time here than I thought. The cave park is a few miles from the town area of Hilo in the middle of neighborhoods with a small parking area across the street. Down a set of stairs are two cave openings. The one on the left seems to be very small but there is an opening under a rock shelf that leads back pretty far.
The cave opening on the right was the more heavily trafficked when we visited. It is fairly easy to walk for a ways before coming to an opening that requires getting a little lower. I didn’t go too much farther after that but some in our party did and they had a great time. Most people were using the flashlights on their phones and this will work ok but an actual flashlight or headlamp is considerably easier.
Our family had a great time at Kaumana Cave Park. It can be a quick stop for a brief walk into a cave or a longer adventure for exploring.

Kaumana Cave is a cool little system right outside of Hilo that is easily accessible to anyone (well not wheelchairs, it’s a cave.)
The cave itself is interesting, and most people don’t seem to go further than a couple hundred feet in at most. What people don’t realize is this cave has over 2200ft of mapped passages. The first day we stopped here we went in to the left and made it a little ways in before we needed to make it to our cabin. Lots of roots hanging from the ceiling on this side, and a good amount of breakdown to crawl over. The other side is more interesting (to the right after climbing down stairs) we followed the passage all the way until a massive pile of breakdown chokes the passage and creates a feature in the cave known as the Labyrinth, a complex little jumble of squeezes that must be passed through to get to the rest of the cave. My wife and her brother were about good to go at this point so we turned around, but past the Labyrinth there is still almost 1000ft of passages, so don’t be afraid and push through!
The cave has seen quite a lot of vandalism including spray painting, carving on the walls/floors and trash left by some of societies more deplorable rejects. My hope is that anyone entering a cave to deface or destroy it happens to be in the cave during the very small geologic time frame where the cave collapses and if not you better be strapped up if I find you in the act. Lots of arrows painted on the walls and floors even though there is literally one way out, only the brain dead scumbags needed these after pounding a 6 pack and smashing the bottles on the floor.

We enjoyed these more than the lava tube at VNP. This is just a turn off on the side of the road. There are steep steps to get to them. There is one to the left & 1 to the right. Both are dark, so bring a flash light. It's also very rugged and slippery - so I'd recommend closed toe sneakers or hiking boots. It's probably a 20 - 30 minute stop, unless you want to traverse deep into the left hand cave.

Lava tubes = the coolest. Bring long sleeves as it will get cooler the deeper you go and will help protect you from scratches. But more importantly bring a headlamp. Ideal to go with a companion as it quickly gets pitch dark.

There are lava tubes throughout the island. No need to simply go to this park. You can visit some lava tubes on the Kona highway just outside of the Kona airport.
Just do a Google search for lava tubes on big Hawaii island. It will show you several places that are easily accessible from main roads. They don't require a hike. Bring a strong flashlight and a headlight. You can typically park along the road walk through them and get , a great sense of how neat lava tubes are on this island

Learned a lot about volcanos and lava and lava tubes. Mo was a great and informative guide. Provided headlamps, flashlights and knee pads for the trek. Got wonderful pics of our experiences. We did the 2 hour tour but spent about 3 hours with our guide.

we will be coming in on a cruise ship. Is there a bus that runs from the port area
Đã viết vào 3 tháng 11, 2017
I do not think there are any busses that run there specifically. You might be able to find a city bus that passes close by or like others have said uber/lyft.

How long would you say we should allow for exploring? Wondering if we can fit in another activity.
Đã viết vào 29 tháng 6, 2017
Hey, I agree with everyone, depending on your interest, 15min. to 2 hrs. It can be damp, chilly and absolutely dark. Check your batteries and bring a flashlight.

Hi just wondering if the Sulfur smell in strong there as my friend has asthma. Thanks
Đã viết vào 31 tháng 1, 2016
No Sulfur smell. Very humid.
My husband has asthma and he did great in the tubes. He did admit that the further back he went, he really could feel the "thick" air, but he had no adverse effects.

Is there an entrance or parking fee?
Đã viết vào 25 tháng 1, 2015
Good news. Plenty of free parking and no entrance fee. Bathrooms, picnic tables, and very safe environment, especially for the kids. If you are traveling from Kona on Saddle Road, it is right off that road, just outside Hilo.
