There are two ways to get to the beach, one is by local trucks who currently charge 20.00 per person for the ride in and out. If you are not used to hiking 5 mile round trip take the truck. If you do decide to hike, as we did, there are numerous trails made by the trucks to get to the beach. The most direct route is to stay to the left, where most of the trucks go, this will take you to the beach access. If you follow the trails to the right you'll go along the ocean and end up at an overlook as in the photo below. You then hike a bit further to get to the access point. There are some stairs and a relatively low slope cliff and sand bank that you need to walk down to get to the actual beach. If you hike bring plenty of water.

Very cool experience from the truck drive down to the time spent at the beach. It is one of the few green sand beaches in the world and it is worth checking out....it is on a part of the island that is not close to anything (but there is a black sand beach nearby) so plan on taking most of the day for this trip.

This beach is absolutely gorgeous and was one of the highlights of our trip. You can hike there from the parking lot or hitch a ride from the people doing trips to the beach. Personally we hiked, and I felt like that made the view even better. It is a bit hot though, especially later in the day. The hike was maybe 2 miles there and then 2 miles back. Definitely a must-see. The pictures just don’t capture the beauty of seeing it in real life.

It was NOT a beach we went down a very log road to find the"green sand beach" mind you following signs saying this way to the green sand beach, there was no beach, we sat on these high cliffs, watched people coming and fishing off the very high cliffs, we hung around for the the sunset, it was beautiful. I Dont think we would go to this particular none existing beach next time.🤔🫤

My husband and I drove two hours from Kona. Follow GPS to a parking lot.
Parked.
Walked by foot about 5-6 miles round trip.
Worth it. Beautiful and was first on my to do list.
Wear hiking shoes. Wear hat, sunscreen or sunshirt at least. Bring water. Bring light weight snacks- jerky, protein bars etc. Use hiking pack. Sunglasses.
Road is flatish…gouged by trucks that drive people to and from the bay.
We did not pay the private fees to travel that way. These trucks are probably destroying the land to get to the bay.
As best we could figure- the beach is public- the land hiked through to get there is leased to someone with Hawaiian ancestry and is therefore private. But people are allowed access to it - to get to the beach.
Go early to avoid afternoon heat.
Make sure to go the southern most point in the US. It is very close. GPS to drive there. You will park and walk a short ways.

Yes, it's a bit arduous and probably no matter if you're walking or being driven on a pickup truck - but it's worth it! We have run, it is uneven but not very demanding terrain However, you run for less than an hour, usually, in full sun. So drinks and sun protection are a must. Otherwise, you don't really need to take much.
A small hidden cove with beautiful waves and actually green, sparkling sand. A nice tour for which you should schedule time if you do not live nearby.

Be prepared for about 5 hours of a dusty, hot hike along the coast to get to the top edge where you can look down onto the tiny beach, then a terrifying scaling of the wall down- which we did not do! Or you can pay some local guy is a trashed truck 20 to drive you there, with the chance the truck could flip, but don't worry because you would be standing, piled in the back of the pick up with 8 or more other people who can help to right the truck once flipped. The "road" to get there is NOT for rental vehicles. You must park by the only godawful outhouse and walk, or catch a ride from one of the locals. Bring Lots of water, snacks, sunscreen and a hat for sure, if you go.

Direct sun all the way if you walk it (6 miles total)
Dusty all the way.
Not a straight path.
Absolutely need sun screen, lots of water and head covering. Do not even think about taking a toddler by the hand for a “walk to the beach”.
Once you get there steep drop down to beach. Sand is olive green.
Not a swim able beach.
Take the “taxis” that are there (an adventure in itself). $20/pp.
Stay for the hour. Take the taxi back.
HOWEVER…our 28 year old daughter walked it both ways and liked it.

If you want to see this beach you are going to have to walk! Our guide book said it was 2.25 miles each way - we clocked it at 6km each way (more like 3.78 miles). We started at the southernmost point of the USA and saw where the Hawaiians pull their boats out of the water. There are some sacred sites along here as you walk through the tricky beaches or on the 4x4 trails to the green sand beach. If you have a 4x4 you could try it but some of the ruts look pretty big! It was a Sunday when we went and when we arrived some locals offered a lift back- standing in their pickup - for $15 each - we were walked. There is a ladder down to the beach which is quite easy and then you walk through a narrow crevice to the green sand beach - one of only 4 in the world I was told! The hike was lovely as we saw a pure coral beach and then a black lava field before hitting the green sand. Take plenty of water and there are no facilities.

I’m ambivalent about writing this as I could contribute to hordes of tourists descending on this out-of-this- world beach.
My husband and I walked there and back (I am just over 60 and he is 70). The walk is just under 5K each way and it is super easy. I even ran a small part of it and could have ran the entire way had I had a proper running gear. The only issue is sun. You will not feel the heat though because of the wind. However, your skin and body will. Take enough water, very good hat that will not blow away in the wind, sunscreen and not fancy shoes as they will be very dirty by the end. The trek down to the beach only looks precarious. I couldn’t believe that even some young people were afraid to venture down. Photos are nowhere close to capturing the beauty of the place. And BTW sand is really green.

Where exactly is the green sand beach? Google Maps shows it NE of the southern most point, while Bing shows it Just North of the southernmost point? Hoping to surprise my wife when we go.

I honestly don’t remember how we found it. It’s confusing because there is not a road anywhere near. You follow the signs to it… then you walk a very very long way or let a local take you in the back of a pick up truck off roading. I had friends who paid the $20 cash for the ride and it was worth it!

Hi! Are locals still offering rides to Papakolea Green Sand Beach? If so, are they already there as early as 7:00 am?
Đã viết vào 21 tháng 7, 2021
We started our hike around 6:30 am. No one on the trail and only a few on the way back. The locals started transporting around 9. It’s a pretty easy hike. No elevation and about 45-50 minutes each way.

Hi,
Can someone confirm that the shuttles are still an option as of 2/9/2020? I have a torn ACL and can't do the beach if I can't get a ride in. Please let me know!
Đã viết vào 10 tháng 2, 2020
When we were there in November, shuttles were still running. However, access to the beach is down a steep set of stairs/path and may not be very easy to navigate if you are still recovering from ACL surgery. Its worth it though if you are into out of the way places not everyone gets to see. Good luck

Anyone see any signs of a break-in at the parking lot? Locals warn about parking, but I haven't heard any visitors mention having their cars broken into.
Đã viết vào 18 tháng 10, 2019
We were warned about breaks ins by people we spoke to in Kona restaurants, so changed our plan by dropping luggage and valuables to the hotel in Hilo and drive back all the way again with just water & food and anything that we can just carry on us.
Best to keep any valuables out of plain sight esp luggages.
However, the car park was really busy and populated when we were there.

If a local drives you to the green sand beach, how long do you get to stay for before they take you back?
Đã viết vào 27 tháng 8, 2019
You can negotiate the time spent on the beach. You don’t necessarily have to get a ride back with the same local who drove you to the beach. There are other locals who can take you back usually every 30-60min. You just need to ask if they have room in their vehicles for you.

I heard from someone that today (April 1 2019) the local $20 shuttles from the parking lot to the beach were ending due to new government regulations. I could very well be getting incorrect information. Does anyone know if this is true?
Đã viết vào 2 tháng 4, 2019
You can drive to the cliffs further south. There is a road, fairly rough, but drivable, where the divers jump off. It's above the beach to the south and a pretty good walk down to the actual beach if you're able to go down some big rock. Haven't been there in a while but it's easily accessible by car or 4 wheel or truck.
Đã viết vào 2 tháng 4, 2019
How much is the ride down to the beach and do they only take cash?
Đã viết vào 27 tháng 3, 2019
It is about 3 miles to walk and the walk is difficult. The ride is about 20 minutes and is $20 per person cash only. Some people walked and took the ride back for half the price, if there was a driver that had space. Most that walked one way were very happy to have a ride back. A regular car cannot make the drive and even a 4 wheel drive will probably get banged up as the turns are difficult. I'd pay the $20. The Green Sand Beach trip was a highlight of our visit to the Big Island. I am 70 years old and my wife is 76.

Hi. I do not know how to drive, but I would love to visit the green sand beach. Is there any way/ public transport/ rideshare etc from the Kona / Hilo side to there? Thanks!
Đã viết vào 23 tháng 10, 2017
So since I wrote this review, I have been there many times. If you can't drive, talk a friend into going with you. Make sure they drive!! LOL. Once you are in South Point, there are often locals who will drive you there for a price. You can try bargaining, but they stick together and have set the price. When I have driven, there are always people walking. It is not that far! I drove there once with 5 people in my SUV, and another couple I knew were walking. The road is rough enough that they arrived 10 minutes after we did!! I am gimped, so walking is not an option for me! So when you stand looking out at the ocean from the boat launch, turn left and walk. Stay between the fence and the ocean. The beach is not huge, so don't miss it. I have been there with no one else but my friends and I. And I have been there when there are a couple hundred people. Most of them had walked. It's worth it!!
Fionicaly. I will try to get hold of you next time I go through this website...

Planning a day trip from Oahu, how/where do you find the locals to ferry you in/out from the green sand beach?
Thank you,
kat

If you follow the road all the way to the South Point, they have a sign for Green Sand Beach parking and the locals are parked in there. They pretty much approach everyone who pulls in but you'll be able to spot them as they have trucks with couches in the back or trucks with built up hand rails. It seems kind of sketchy but it really added to our experience! Enjoy - it was totally worth it!

how rough is the water where they cliff jump? Im not the best swimmer but i can swim fairly well. im just a little worried about strong current and how far u must swim to get out.
Đã viết vào 8 tháng 1, 2017
I would not jump. Don't do it..... Today my wife and I visited. Just as we showed up they were dragging out a lady that drown in front of 40 plus people. From what we heard she jumped in but was unable to climb the ladder to get out. Sadly it appears she got tired and that was it.
I looked at this flimsy old steel ladder and I don't think I would make it out... Also the surf was above average. Whoever she was... Rest on peace. Sad day.
