Visited the museum on a Sunday afternoon in November. We found it to be well worth the visit. We discovered the museum not only held art but also had a display of equipment used years ago used in the processing of wine. Sagrantino anyone?

An interesting art gallery as well as the church (which is accessed only through this museum) with its beautiful frescoes. Below the church are the ancient cellars where the friars produced the famous Sagrantino and which have remained hidden for years. It was uncrowded that morning and I could see everything calmly, stopping on what interested me most.

The Church of San Francesco represents the heart of the museum complex. It was built between 1335 and 1338 by the Friars Minor, in 1863 it became property of the Municipality of Montefalco who transformed it into an art gallery and civic museum. Externally the church presents a simple and clean monotonous façade of white stone, while the interior reserves notable surprises. The plan is rectangular, composed of a central nave which ends with a pentagonal apse, on the sides of which there are two chapels. The visitor is certainly struck by the quantity and variety of frescoes still present, all excellently recovered with a correct balance between density and intensity of colours. There are several niches on the sides which are also frescoed and dedicated to various saints such as Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Andrew, Saint Ignatius of Antioch, etc. works by different authors. The apse is also of notable beauty with a wooden choir at the base while the walls and vault are completely frescoed with scenes from the life of Saint Francis and other saints and characters of the Franciscan order. The splendid chapels of the church to be admired must certainly also be mentioned, the Chapel of the Passion, the Chapel of the Annunciation, the Chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate, and others.

Montefalco, one of the most beautiful villages in Umbria, is known not only for its Sagrantino and Rosso di Montefalco wines, but also for the wonderful frescoes of its churches, where those of San Francesco represent the focal point.
There are many frescoes, including those by Perugino, on the counter-façade. The best known, however, are located in the central apse, where in the fifteenth century, Benozzo Gozzoli frescoed the Stories of the Life of Saint Francis, the most complete cycle on the life of the Saint, after that of Assisi.
In addition to the church, the other rooms of the museum are also worth an in-depth visit, including the cellars, where the splendid oak and elm wood press for pressing the grapes is preserved and, in particular, the beautiful Roman statue depicting the hero Hercules, dating back to the 1st century BC.
Absolutely recommended visit.

I was left speechless by the beauty of the frescoes in the church. What a "hidden " gem. Or maybe I just hadn't done my homework first and so was overawed by the beauty of the church but also the paintings and statues. Not to mention the winemaking activities of the old monks in the cellar. And then the cherry on the cake, our poodle was allowed to do the tour with us. Thank you to the curator of this gem. Carefully considered right down to strategically placed seats to admire and rest in an oasis of peace.

Nell'Umbria dei tesori questo è uno scrigno di valore inestimabile legato soprattutto agli splendidi affreschi di Benozzo Gozzoli e del Perugino. Quasi una sfida, a fianco l'uno dell'altro, ma senza vincitori tra due dei piu' grandi artisti di sempre. Un incanto per gli occhi e per lo spirito. E di grande interesse la pinacoteca in cui spicca su tutto, a mio parere, la pala di Antonio Aquili detto Antoniazzo Romano, con i santi Vincenzo da Saragozza, Illuminata e Nicola da Tolentino, rivisitazione addirittura migliore della sua pala con le stesse figure, ma con nomi diversi dei santi, che si trova a San Paolo fuori le mura a Roma.

È uno dei più importanti di tutta l'Umbria ed è composto da : chiesa di san Francesco , la pinacoteca civica la sezione archeologica , le cantine dei frati e alcuni spazi espositivi per mostre tempranee .
La chiesa è meravigliosa , l'abside mostra affreschi dedicati alla vita del santo , la storia di san Girolamo opera di Gozzoli , nell'edicola la natività del Perugino .

Interessante per una visita a Montefalco ma sinceramente un po' caro visto che con 10 euro non ti danno neanche un'audioguida. Gli affreschi raffiguranti la vita di San Francesco sono interassante ma sinceramente si possono anche evitare.
