Yellowstone does not get any more magical than in January. Show, silence, animals, geysers, mountains, majesty, and peace. No other time can you sit on the side of the road for an hour watching buffalo, coyotes, bald eagle, trumpeter swans, and other animals and hear nothing but the calls of the wild and the wind; no other people, none of the cacophony of buses or cars, crowds, intrusive selfies, and competing tour guides that you have in summer.
We did a 5-day tour organized by Yellowstone Forever. There were ten people in the tour. We traveled around the park in our over-snow vehicle and by snow-shoe. Our guide was a wonderful teacher and leader, who had a never-ending supply of information for our inquisitive group. The Old Faithful Snow Lodge was our base, which put us in the middle of endless wonders for the entire time.
Yellowstone has always been amazing. The Yellowstone Forever Foundation lets you experience that amazement. We would go back in a minute.

We spend 2-days with a bear biologist in the Lamar Valley and Central Yellowstone. It was incredible and there is no way we would have had the same Yellowstone experience if we had not spent time with Garrett. We saw wolves, bears, peregrine, ospreys, prong horn, coyotes, mountain goal, bison, elk, eagles, hawks and much more. If you really want to enjoy the park and make the most of your time, book a tour.

For two of our six days visiting Yellowstone we splurged and hired a private guide from the Yellowstone Institute. Both of our guides (Ty and Chelsea) did a wonderful job. They were knowledgeable about a wide range of park phenomenon and history; explained things in a clear and engaging way; and were generally delightful company for the day. (And they were long days: 9 to 4 one day and 8 to 6+ for the other!) They tailored our tours to our interests, including making adjustments during the day and discussing itineraries with each other to coordinate them. It was nice to have someone else driving so we could look around more, and we learned so much more from our experiences than we could have done alone. The provisions of specialized equipment including laser thermometers, pH strips, and especially high-powered scopes, really enhanced our observations. A private tour for just two people was expensive (and the guides should be tipped on top of the tour fee) but for us was well worth the price. We were also happy to support the work of the Institute by becoming members and benefiting from member discounts.

Don't bother stopping here unless you have arranged something previously, as it is not open to the public.

Elizabeth (wish I could remember her last name, trail name on AT was Sketcher I think...), anyway - we did a full day tour with her and it was simply remarkable. Included visit to a secluded stream and pond where we saw cutthroat trout running up stream, travel to a few choice spots for wildlife viewing, and an extended hike.
She kept the whole family engaged and it truly was a high point of a spectacular visit to Yellowstone/Tetons.

We took the day-long Tour of the Northern Range with Amanda, and it was awesome! You have to be prepared to get up early and it is a full day, so I wouldn't take it with very young children. You have to be patient in watching for animals, look through binoculars and scopes, etc., but when you see them, it's totally worth it! We saw at least two wolves eating an elk carcass in the river, with coyotes howling to get in on the food. Priceless! You won't always see tons of amazing wildlife, I'm sure, but your best bet to do so is going to be with a knowledgeable guide like Amanda. It's also great to have someone else drive so you can look out, all the while giving interesting facts on what you're seeing. We took an easy hike at the end of the day, and ran across an amazing bison skeleton....so cool!

We did the 4 night three full day wolf and bear program out of Monmouth Hot Springs. Our guide, Josh, was absolutely fantastic. He was so knowledgeable, insightful, and such a wonderful teacher in addition to being fun to spend time with. We saw so much more than we could have on our own including several black bears with cubs, grizzlies with cubs, thousands of bison with Young, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, a badger, elk, many beautiful birds, trumpeter Swan and many many more animals. We spent more than an hour watching wolves at a den including four adults and five pups. Some of the adults would go away and come back with large hunks of meat. May is definitely a wonderful time to visit Yellowstone.

We had a personal tour guide for one of our days at Yellowstone. That day was the highlight of our trip--knowing we were being led by an expert with super sharp eyes that found things we would have missed. We were able to view wolves through spotting scopes, a grizzly bear, and also took a hike to an abandoned wolf den and found buffalo bones; our kids were totally entranced the whole day.

I wanted to know if there is sufficient time to take photos when you're on that tour.
Thanks for your reply.

We did the yellowstone for families tour and they actually loaned out digital cameras to the kids to take pictures during the tour and at the end of the four days we shared our best pictures. So yes there was plenty of time to take pictures.

Can you tell me which of the tours you are describing? My husband and I will be in Yellowstone from 1/9 to 1/16 and we would like to take a tour that includes both hotels exactly as you describe it.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I am trying to plan a visit to Yellowstone for the first time in June. I plan to take a Yellowstone association istitiute learn and lodge program . The one for Yellowstone with Families looks good. I have a 12 year old girl, and I too busy at work to plan my own trip itinerary, etc. Has anyone taken this tour, and what's your experience? Would you recommend another program instead? I am hoping the will lead me to where the wildlife is, set up spotting scopes, and I just follow them. I would like to hike on one day, see geysers on one day, see wildlife on a third, then see any major landscape areas on another. I am looking for a small group experience, and basically want a ranger like guide to show me around. My only wish is to have a kayak or horseback experience in the tour for the price. Let me know what u think.

We did the yellowstone for families tour last summer with an 8 and 10 year old and they did all of the things you describe. Look at the itinerary in their site for details. It was an amazing time a great and knowledgeable guide and the group was 12 people but I think they range from 10-20 people depending on demand. We stayed with the same guide the whole time and she had some off the beaten path spots and tricks she showed us. Accommodations and food were ok but we were not there for those things and the kids still are raving about the trip.
