One of the most impressive old towns in Europe. Incredible flair combined with secluded alleys, just a dream.

Ok so this is of course totally from my point of view but I found rhodes "tiresome" it's a very small place. Our hotel was 1 mile max from the old town and we spent the holiday-every day, walking into the old town and back...absolutely no denying the history of the place but even if you are a real genuine history buff I would still stand by "2 days is enough" maybe I'm being harsh and maybe I should have dug deeper but, for joe average, there is very little to do. The old town itself is very small. I realize that holiday promotion involves "bigging things up" somewhat but really? As for the beaches, all I came across were pebbles, there may be sandy beaches but certainly not within walking distance from our hotel. In a nutshell, I should have gone somewhere else. I'm SURE Greece has more to offer than here. My opinion only but i would try another destination

The quite large old town of Rhodes is a remarkable survival of an essentially western European medieval city, created when the Knights Hospitaller captured the city from the Byzantines in the earlier fourteenth century and then largely preserved under Ottoman rule from the expulsion of order in the early sixteenth century until the Italian conquest of 1912. The most interesting parts to my mind were the numerous narrow side streets, but most famous is the Street of the Knights which is lovely if a little clinically over-restored. Lots of modern shops on the other main streets aimed exclusively at tourists. The massive fortifications with three lines of walls in places are very well preserved and stunnng.

We did enjoy walking around the old town. And we found a very good restaurant where we could sit outside in a rooftop garden. There are lots of food choices in the old town, some very. basic, some just for the tourists, and some very high end. Also lots of places to drink. We liked the atmosphere.

Probably the biggest [population 6,000] and best preserved walled city in Europe. We walked on the walls, around the walls in the moat and, of course, through the narrow streets stopping for regular iced latte and baklava breaks; excellent gelati too. There are apparently 6klm of wall and they are really high [I'm guessing 35ft?] and solid, 4 metres wide [stone faced with rubble fill apparently] and 11 gates. There are many nice quiet shady squares [in October anyway] although the main 'shopping' streets and squares are too touristy for our liking [well it's normal these days], there were 3 massive cruise liners there most days. We strongly recommend the museum, it's in the old knight's hospital, which was really surprisingly good although we realised after our first visit that we'd missed some of the guide book 'must see' statues [eg Nike] so we went back a 2nd day and found we'd actually missed half the museum - it's not well sign posted. Both the museum staff and the Tourist Office could do with some history graduates, the staff were nice and friendly but I think they knew less than us about anything. In fact the lack of information in the old town and on the walls was noticeable - a good Marketing manager would be really helpful for this 'fabulous' city. It's incredible to realise how important and civilised Rhodes was 200BC! For any tourist the shops, cafes and restaurants are excellent, and mostly friendly and low hassle. The one disappointment was to discover that the Grand Master's palace is a 1930s Mussolini 'fake'; it's very pretty though and contains some fine Roman mosaics from Kos. The original palace was destroyed in a mid c19 explosion and there is no information about how closely the 'reconstruction' conforms to the original palace. Talking of mosaics there are 3 or 4 really incredible 2nd, 3rd century BC mosaics in the museum.

Old Town Rhodes, located on the Greek island of Rhodes, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich history, medieval architecture, and unique blend of different cultures. It is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe and offers visitors a fascinating journey through history, from its ancient Greek origins to its time under the Knights of Saint John, the Ottomans, and the Italians.
Key Highlights:
1. Medieval Architecture: The town is encased by imposing medieval walls and features narrow cobblestone streets, stone houses, and impressive monuments. Key landmarks include:
The Palace of the Grand Master: This grand fortress was the residence of the Knights of Saint John and is now a museum showcasing medieval relics and art.
Street of the Knights: A well-preserved, atmospheric street lined with the inns of the knights from different countries.
Roloi Clock Tower: Offering stunning panoramic views of the town, it's a prime spot for photographers.
2. Cultural Influence: The Old Town is a melting pot of cultures due to its long history of conquest and occupation. You can find influences from the Byzantines, Knights of Saint John, Ottoman Turks, and Italians in its buildings, mosques, churches, and synagogues.
3. Mosques and Churches: Several Ottoman-era mosques, such as the Süleymaniye Mosque, and Greek Orthodox churches, like the Church of the Virgin of the Burgh, show the town’s multicultural past.
4. Jewish Quarter: The Old Town also has a historic Jewish quarter with the Kahal Shalom Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in Greece, and the Jewish Museum of Rhodes, which highlights the history of the Jewish community on the island.
5. Shops and Markets: The narrow streets of Old Town are filled with charming shops selling local crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs. The Sokratous Street is a popular shopping area. You’ll also find plenty of traditional Greek tavernas, offering local delicacies like souvlaki and fresh seafood.
6. Vibrant Nightlife: Old Town Rhodes comes alive at night with lively bars, cafés, and restaurants. The ambiance changes from a historical journey by day to a vibrant, festive atmosphere by night.
Visitor Experience:
Accessibility: The medieval streets, though charming, can be challenging to navigate due to cobblestones, making them less accessible for those with mobility issues.
Crowds: During the peak tourist season (summer months), the town can get very crowded, especially in popular areas like the Palace of the Grand Master and Sokratous Street.
Best Time to Visit: For a quieter experience, visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (April-May) or fall (September-October) is recommended. The weather is still pleasant, and the crowds are smaller.
Overall Impression:
Old Town Rhodes is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and those wanting to immerse themselves in a unique blend of cultures. It offers a perfect combination of historical exploration, shopping, and dining, all within the atmospheric setting of a medieval town. Whether you're exploring ancient ruins, wandering through its winding streets, or enjoying a meal at a local taverna, Old Town Rhodes offers an unforgettable experience.

You could always go by boat?
Đã viết vào 22 tháng 9, 2019
Old town is exactly that. The town operates all the time with stores restaurants hotels, museums , If you want to visit the great museums & walk part of the wall buy a multi pass. The wall walk is only open for several hrs in the morning, i think until 2pm. It is closed on certain days.
We stayed in old town for 8 days & found not much happens before 10 am.

Where to eat healthy in Rhodes old town
Đã viết vào 18 tháng 7, 2019
In the main square there are lots of restaurants all very helpful. I'm vegetarian and I said I wanted a pizza so they just made me up one. Another lady in our group was dairy free and explain she wanted a pasta but not the sauce and they made a tomato based. This was 2 different restaurants so the obviously are all really helpful.

Hi there,
Can I please ask any recent visitors to Kalithea, how much a taxi to the old town of Rhodes costs from there?
Thanks in advance!
Đã viết vào 16 tháng 5, 2019
Hello, the cost will be approximately 25 euros by taxi at the most one way. You may be able to get a lower price, it is best to ask at the taxi stand for their standard rate. This was as of March 24th, 2019.

Not sure about a boat to Lindos. It would take quite a time I suspect. Also you need to be careful on the day you set off. If the sea seems even a little bit bouncy and the wind is strong, don't do it. Even a short journey (ie over to Marmaris) can turn into a very unpleasant affair. First time I have ever been sea sick and I have travelled in winter time across the Irish Sea!
