This is one of many small and isolated churches along the Fira-Oia walking trail.
If like us, you start at Fira, then you’ll pass right by the church, just after leaving the small town of Imerovigli.
It is located on the top of a hill so it has a great view and on a hot day, it’s a timely spot to have a break and catch your breath.
The church was closed when we were there (I suspect that’s it’s mostly closed). However it has a simple cobbled courtyard area with some shade and seating. This is where most walkers were stopping for a short rest and a long swig of the water bottle.
The church itself is quite humble. What you see here is a traditional white-washed church with a small bell tower and a characteristic dome.
It’s a relatively modern church. It was built to replace an older 18th century church that was also dedicated to St Mark.
