It was a lot of fun walking around. Lots to take in. It’s 2 markets next to each other. You’ll see the medieval market and a traditional one.

Esslingen is a beautiful town with many standout architectural components, which when blended together as the backdrop for a Chrismas Market, set an enchanting scene.
A lot of effort is put into maintaining a medieval theme throughout the entire main market. This makes the market itself feel like a spectacle in comparison to the more familiar commercialised Christmas Markets which we see in larger towns.
In addition, this market sold many souvenirs, foods and drinks which we did not encounter in the Stuttgart Christmas Market making it a worthwhile detour both for the market and the scenery.

Arrivés un peu par hasard pour une étape nocturne dans cette ville en plein décembre sous une belle couche de neige nous avons découvert ce magnifique écrin pour un sublime marché de noël .
Les colombages, la neige les stands médiévaux superbes , les personnages en costumes la qualité des produits : c’est un must de découvrir cela .
Le plus beau et le plus original marché de Noël parmi les 10 que nous avons visité en Allemagne .
La ville a des trésors architecturaux dont la plus vielles maison à colombages d’Allemagne en plein cœur du marché ( quel dommage par contre que que la moitié des maisons à colombages sont noyés sous le crépi !).
L’hôtel de ville est sublime et domine ce marché unique .
Assurément un must !.

Sehr schönes Ambiente aber in Stoßzeiten sehr voll die Mittelaltermarktscene ist sehenswert das kulinarische eher gemischt ner Glühwein schmeckt glaube ich nur in dieser umgebung

A short 20 minute train ride from Stuttgart's main Hauptbahnhof and you arrive in Esslingen am Neckar. This is a small quaint town that hosts a unique and festive medieval Christmas market each year. They locate it in the heart of the "old town" around their rathaus or town hall. Folks dress in period costumes, the stalls are theme based e.g. bakery,cobbler, butcher etc. and they have entertaining shows put on by the locals. If you have the time, you'll enjoy it as we did!

Anfangs mit eigener Bäckerei,Schmidt,weniger Fressstände mehr Handwerk.Überall Strohballen Fakeln Eisenkörbe mit Feuer es war eine düstere urige Stimmung ,Der heutige Markt hat vieles weggelassen der wird heutzutage zu oft kopiert,hat den Reiz verloren.

Der Esslinger Weihnachtsmarkt hat uns sehr gefallen.
Vorallem der mittelalterliche Markt war sehenswert.
Für Kinder ist da sehr viel geboten.
Geduld sollte man allerdings mit bringen, da er sehr überfüllt war.

`Even if it was "only" a Christmas market, this one is an amazing Christmas market! But it's more, it's also a middle ages market. You must try the meat-on-a-stick with gluhbier! Oh. My!

Visited the Esslingen Christmas market while we were staying in Stuttgart, where do I begin, excellent medieval themed Christmas market, stall holders dressed in costume, some giving exhibitions of their trades, very knowledgeable about the times they were depicting. Street musicians/minstrels strolling around the streets, Esslingen itself is a very pretty town with lots of half timbered buildings, well worth a visit any time of year but especially at Christmas time. The town is easily accessible from Stuttgart main train station, trains run every 15 minutes or so.

thanks so much for this review! I have just added it to our list for Christmas 2020, sounds wonderful and I can't wait to visit. My husband and I visit Germany every year for Christmas markets, love this time of year but somehow we have missed this area.

HI, the Christmas markets are only during advent ending the 24th of December. I hear that there are other events and activities in the Spring and Summer however I wouldn't know any details. I would suggest trying the website called Smart Traveler, I found tons of information on Germany in the forum there

Yes, The S1 takes 20 minutes from Stuttgart and then it's about 5 minutes walk to the entrance of the market.
