Mount Putuo is a beautiful place to visit. Seeing all three temples is a lot though and we could’ve done with just two. The idle worship was a bit much to take though. While we were not vegetarian the vegetarian restaurant there is worth the visit. The gourmet food was spectacular. And I was afraid I wouldn’t like it.

We arrived to stay the night in Zhoushan before heading to Putuoshan the following morning for a full day tour on the island with a guide. While checking in we were informed that the ferry services to the island were cancelled for the day we were visiting due to inclement weather, and we were left with no choice but to rush to the island after checking in and to do an abbreviated tour of the island ourselves.
Ferry services leave every 15 mins and the last ferry departing the island back to Zhoushan was at 9pm, so we figured we had enough time to cover about 3-4 temples before they close at 5pm. Getting ferry tickets was a bit of a palaver as sign posting to the ticket counter was confusing, crowded and chaotic, but the actual ferry boat was new, well maintained and comfortable, plus the trip across only took about 15-20 mins.
Putuoshan is a very popular destination for domestic pilgrimage and tours, so expect crowds even when it isn't a peak holiday period. The small roads are walking paths are well organised though, with wardens marshalling the crowds along. Expect touts along the way, and while we were approached we weren't harassed by them.
Putuoshan is a special place for Buddhists to visit, and a quaint island to stay on to explore. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances our visit there was cut short.
Pro-tips:
1. If you're travelling from Shanghai (as we did), it is a LONG drive so book a comfortable mode of transport. We had a private hire driver booked through a local tour agency. We were told that the journey would take 3.5 to 4 hours but in reality it took 5 hours as we were stuck in the morning gridlock of Shanghai for an hour before hitting the highway out to Zhoushan.
2. Plan to stay for a night or two in case of inclement weather causing cancellation of ferry services across to Putuoshan from the mainland.
3. International visitors need their passports to book the ferry tickets (or any tickets at tourist venues in China). Book a business class ferry ticket to avoid the long queues at the main ticket counter. Or go to the special counter for international visitors to process your regular priced tickets. These two options will save you time and hassle.

Crowds of people pushing and screaming, eating and smoking, and even leaving piles of rubbish behind inside the temple complex. You wait an eternity for the ferry. The return journey in particular is impossible to predict (I waited for almost an hour, even though I returned at midday). The whole island has no atmosphere whatsoever. I have been travelling in China for 40 years and would advise against visiting.

#Where to go for a weekend break
I wanted to take a bus from Shanghai to Putuo Mountain because I was not familiar with the route. But my noble friend advised me to take a plane and told me not to take a boat. I regretted it on the way back because the flight back to Shanghai was really late. As a result, I canceled the ticket, paid the fine, and hitchhiked back to Shanghai. It is really not expensive to hitchhike from Zhoushan to Shanghai.
You have to take a boat from Zhoushan to Putuo Mountain. The boat ride takes ten to fifteen minutes. There are queues for ordinary and business class. It doesn't take too long to queue during non-peak hours, but it may take dozens of minutes during peak hours. I tried both the ordinary class and business class. There is a VIP lounge for business class, and it only costs a few dozen yuan more. It is definitely worth it.
Don't miss Zaozishu (vegetarian restaurant) when you go to Putuo Mountain. It is just a 5-10 minute walk from Puji Temple. It is really delicious vegetarian food. Because there are many people, it is recommended to come early to eat, otherwise you can only wait and wait. My favorite vegetarian restaurant is Zaozishu, which is near Puji Temple and only a ten-minute walk away. Recommend sweet and sour spare ribs, tomato hotpot, and fragrant tofu:
I left at 6:30, and there were already many people waiting outside the restaurant. I suggest you arrive earlier.
I feel most strongly about Nanhai Guanyin, followed by Foding Mountain, and third Puji Temple. Putuo Mountain is definitely a place you can come again and again, it is very spiritual! Thank you, I saw that I had tears
My health has not been very good from last year to this year. I know that my body has a bad aura. The magical thing is that when I walked all the way to Nanhai Guanyin, I had burps all the way, and I vomited at the end. This is the second time in my life. At this time, I knew that I was detoxifying, and I knew that I was helped by Nanhai Guanyin. Looking at the statue of Nanhai Guanyin, my eyes were a little tearful. I am so grateful! Fortunately, I came.
Tip: You must bring cash, and you have to pay in cash to enter the temple!
Tip: If you want to go to Puji Temple for morning classes, arrive one day earlier! You have to register in the temple first, and you also have to pay cash. I forgot whether it was 500 yuan. The prayer ticket can be used by three people to do morning prayers together. You can write three names on the prayer ticket for prayers. If you write one more person, you will be charged 50 yuan more.
Tip: You must arrive at Puji Temple before 3:30 in the morning. It is best to book a hotel near the temple.
Tip: After doing morning prayers, go to Nanhai Guanyin first. It is a magical experience, and it is not hard to walk from Puji Temple.
Tip: If you want to do morning prayers facing the Buddha statue, it is best to arrive early. I came alone and arrived at 3:20, and only then found a single seat at the back.
My itinerary: Arrive at Puji Temple a day early to pay for morning prayers, have dinner early at Zaozishu, and go to bed early
My itinerary
Do morning prayers at Puji Temple at 3:30 in the morning ~ Walk to Nanhai Guanyin ~ Take a car to Fayu Temple ~ Take a cable car to and from Foding Mountain and then have lunch at Sangzishu

We went for a one day trip to Putuoshan - starting with a board / ferry trip from Zhujiajian Island to Putuo Island - although it was not peak season and even on Thursday (not weekend) it was already terribly crowded - with individual and in particular tourist groups from all over China. Visiting several temples and the 100 paces beach, you get easily tired and hungry - unfortunately, there are very limited restaurants on the island (it is said that there should be great vegetarian ones but we could not find any of them) - hence, you may consider to take your lunch along and have great dinner in Zhoushan or Zhujiajian.

Beautiful bouddhist temples, beautiful scenery, pleasant strolls along paths on the mountain and along the road boarding the sea. Fresh air and refreshing sights of mountains, islets and sea.Recommend to visit Foding peak, Huiji temple, Fayu temple, Puji temple and Nanhai Guyin. Difficult to avoid the crowd of tourists and the faithful during high seasons.

Heard of this island for long, finally came for a visit! So they said, one day isn’t enough, yes, at least two! We quickly select four of the same halls since we have only one short day!
Do plan for at least two if you want to see a bit more, or go as early to have at least major four halls!
It is great for me, a bit rush!

Hi. I have a day to Putuo mountain, when flying from Bangkok. Is it possible to rent a car and drive from Shanghai Pudong airport to Zhoushan via the bridge G92 to Ningbo, then take bridge G9211 to Zhoushan, and then take speed boat to Putuo Mountain?
Đã viết vào 30 tháng 9, 2017
Sure! You should find a local driver that can drive you from shanghai to zhoushan.
Basically, we found a local driver and followed the map (Gao Duc map from China), the drove to zhoushan. You dont need to find a speed boat. They have regular boat to putao mountain.

Hi is there a cab that will take us to putuoshan, and roughly how much will that be?
Đã viết vào 16 tháng 3, 2017
Putuoshan is an island.
You can only reach there by ferry.
On the island, there is only public bus but it is easy as the destinations are in English too.

Hi, can any one suggest tour operator ( land arrangement) on mt Putuo 2 or 3 days pilgrimage?
Đã viết vào 30 tháng 12, 2016
If you can speak Mandarin, you do not need a guide as the travelling on the island is pretty simple.
If not, there are guides at the ferry terminal.
But believe me, the temples are easily reached by the buses with names in English.

Hello! I would like to ask phshanks and staff about the 24-course Vegetarian Lunch: which hotel served this unusual and extremely good fare? Thank you!! Debbie
Đã viết vào 27 tháng 9, 2016
In Putuoshan you may request for vegetarian lunch or dinner from some restaurant however I cannot say the food is tasty and the price is fare as this area serve typically all tourists business.
