On one of my walks across Bad Ischl I discovered Kolowrat Sudhaus, not far away from the train station. It has not got anything to do with brewing beer, but with the production of salt. It is a former “Pfannhaus“ in which the brine was evaporated in basins („Pfannen“) to gain salt. These saltworks were built between 1826 and 1835 and they were used until 1965. They were important economically and technologically speaking. I think they belong to a chapter of the history of Bad Ischl that should not be neglected or forgotten. Salt was the gold of Salzkammergut. People lived from the production of salt, which had become the basis of their well-being. When the Ischl salt mine was not profitable any more, the salt was transported here from Hallstadt.
The building has got two storeys and a tower on top. It is no longer symmetrical because there was another wing with a second tower, which was destroyed after 1965. Sudhaus is now part of a trading yard close to the River Traun. I entered the Sudhaus complex from the Eastern side. When I was there on a Saturday evening I was all alone. It was all quiet. The whole structure has been under monument protection for some time now due to its historical importance and its relevance for the townscape of Bad Ischl. Parts of it have been revitalised. Still, the salty remnants of the past can be seen in the facade...
