The story of the Bakhawan Mangrove Forest is quite amazing! The forest is almost entirely manmade, planted on previously barren mudflats. Over the past 33 years, committed local residents have planted this forest from nothing, now totalling more than 220 hectares. The local residents, who are organized into the Kalibo Save the Mangroves Association (KASAMA), have garnered numerous awards for their incredible accomplishments. They now operate an impressive eco-park that is a popular tourist attraction, with a 1.2 kilometer bamboo and wooden boardwalk reaching out to the coast. Along the way, visitors will spot thousands of crabs, mud skippers, kingfishers and other birds, and perhaps a snake or two. A great place to visit with kids, who will love the crabs and other wildlife. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Some improvements could still be made (e.g., their selection of souvenirs for sales is rather limited, they could be offering more tourist activities like boating and kayaking, etc.), but the eco-park is still a very pleasant place to visit.

Great place to relax, listen to bird songs, try to locate the birds.. Wall all the way to the end. You might see some critters you've never seen before... They were definitely new to me. The kids had fun interacting with nature.

This 1km mangrove eco park in Kalibo, Aklan is a must visit. Lucky for me to get in here during low peak season of tourists which is September. I was able to enjoy the place. A lot of things to do in here. You can rent a boat or kayak. Go some fishing and or plant a mangrove. Nature explorer will surely love this place. I came here on a side trip before heading to Boracay. Entrance is just Php 150.

A nice and good place to walking where you can enjoy the view of the river the smell and on the end is the sea side. Take a rest for 10 minutes seat and clear your mind have a deep breathing for the fresh air.

Don’t give up if you find it hard to locate the entrance of the Eco Park. You are not alone. We have to use Waze to find the place. There is an ongoing building construction nearby and the entrance itself is quite narrow to spot it immediately. The reward comes when you walk the bamboo and wood elevated steps. The serene beauty of the thousands of Mangrove trees in its natural habitat can easily overwhelm the senses. Sea breeze from the sea at the end of the walkpath is an awesome relief. This saved the environment undertaking uncover the fascinating side that people are natural lovers of nature. One critical observation: there was not a single plastic trash below the steps the whole length of 1000 meters of mangrove walkway.

Bakhawan is an excellent get away so close to the crowds of Kalibo. But be advised... the park was under renovation in July 2019~ The concession at the water is closed, temporarily replaced by a small shack on the trail. No rafting or kayaks and the demonstration fish farm is non operational. The tamilok challange was still operating and that's why we came. Once the renovations are finished, all will fully enjoy this beautiful place again!

Just talk to one of the tricycle drivers there. They'll get you there in about 10 minutes, 15 minutes at most. As visiting this site takes about 1 hour, maybe 1.5 if you take it easy, you can just agree with the driver to wait for you and drive you back to the city or the airport (even though sufficient drivers usually line up outside the park). It shouldn't cost more than 300P ($5) in total, including waiting and both rides.
