Amazing! Don’t miss this property. It’s amazing how well the priory has been preserved. The stained glass on its own is with the trip. The Manor House is lovely though not as well preserved. This is a hidden gem. You won’t regret it!

A return visit to an English Heritage gem, the utter beauty and the tranquility of this place, the Church and the Manor House cannot be overstated. The setting, in a deep valley next to the River Coquet, is stunning. The church interior is breathtaking, and on this occasion we heard the rare, Grade 1 listed example of a William Hill organ being played for a wedding. If you can, you should visit if in the area, it's very near to Cragside.

It was so nice that you got to hear our wonderful organ, which makes the most of our amazing accoustics.
We hope you get to visit us again soon

Firstly, this review is not intended for the Priory but for the rather rude and obnoxious man we came across. My husband and I decided to go to Simonside for a walk but at the last minute headed to the priory to check it out. We saw a sign (not English Heritage (EH)) at the top of the driveway to say the Priory was closed and that there was no access to EH members and visitors. Further behind this sign was the official EH sign detailing opening/closing times and no closure sign. We were not bothered about the priory but thought it would be nice/ok to have a walk around the grounds and just take pics. So we parked up (another car was in the carpark and we did pass the owners walking down) and headed down to the priory. I decided to take a look at the River Coquet and went through an open gate. This apparently was private property even though there was no signage. My husband was nearby trying to look on his phone for a walking trail. All of a sudden a man walks across the gravelled yard from what looked like a tipi tent (think it is a wedding events place after researching) to me asking what was I doing. To cut a very long story short I explained that we were wanting to look at the priory grounds and his reply was "didn't we see the 3 signs saying the priory was closed" and that we were on private property. We apologised and said we didn't realise. We thought it was just the priory that was closed and that the area was accessible. Yes, I wandered onto a private area but where was the signage??! What my husband and I was surprised at was the attitude and rude behaviour of this individual. Rather than just accepting the apology his manner was awful and just damn right rude. Spouting off a load of crap to be honest. There are three signs but two of them are EH and one is their sign. Word of advice to the individual...put clear signage up that it's private property and close your gate. From the gates being open all the way down to the priory says to me that even though the priory is closed, it is ok to walk around the grounds. Maybe a sign should say that there is private property. Maybe EH should lock the gates but it is a shared driveway with this individual so pose problems. I don't know ..... but like I said to him, there's no need to get above yourself. Get your issues properly sorted out and get over yourself.

hello J6737MZrachelh
Thank you for your review. and my apologies for the delayed response.
I am sorry you had such a bad experience when you came to Brinkburn out of hours. I have passed on your comments to the landowner, whose property you inadvertently walked onto.
I have also taken on board your comments about the English Heritage signage, and will endeavour to improve it, so that people can easily see we are not open and that there is no access out of hours.
I hope you get the chance to visit us when we are open and that the experience is much improved.
Kind regards

Took a while to find as there were a lot of roadworks going on with road closures. But what a gem when you find it.

We loved Brinkburn Priory. The Priory church is wonderful, with a real atmosphere and beautiful stained glass windows.
The Manor House is a little disappointing, because it is just a shell and you can't go upstairs, but it is still interesting.
The grounds of the Priory are so peaceful and it is worth taking your own picnic, because there are plenty of benches and picnic tables.
The entrance kiosk serves good coffee and the member of staff there was very friendly and helpful, despite not usually working at that venue.
The portaloo was the cleanest and the best smelling I have ever been in - very pleasant!

Hello Janett68
Thank you for your lovely review.
We are proud of our new benches and picnic tables, they make such a difference.
Thank you also for noticing our clean portaloos, we try hard to keep them clean, as temporary toilets can sometimes be quite off putting.
I have passed your comments to the team member you spoke to and his manager. it is always nice when someone appreciates our hard work.
Kind regards

. . . a very moving place, full of history. A second visit having returned after many years and we pretty much had the place to ourselves, in the sunshine on a Sunday morning. A special moment, to enjoy some peace, and escape the crazy world in which we now live.

On a lovely day it was a nice stroll to enjoy a wonderful view of the church and house. The setting is wonderful. The welcome from the staff was very warm. Sadly, we were informed that the church was close to visitors due to a wedding . Our visit to the house and grounds took half an hour. Not being prepared to wait until after the wedding, we left the church for another day.
It is a shame that no advanced warning of weddings is on the website or indeed at the car park before the quarter mile work!

Hello AnneandArk.
Thank you for your review and comments and I am sorry the wedding marred what appears to have been a lovely visit.
We have taken your comments on board and hopefully visitors will now be aware from the carpark when there is a wedding in the Priory.

We never intended to visit here. We were on the A1 travelling north whaen we saw a brown sign for somewhere else and decided to divert. As we diverted we came across the unexpected sign for the Priory and made an instant decision to make yet another diversion to visit. How glad we were to make that decision.
The priory church is virtually intact - although unfurnished - and has amazing accoustics.
Right next door is the Manor House - converted from the monastic buildings - which was inhabited until the mid 20th century. The sympathetic display of the way in which the building was renovated was captivating.
Do not miss the opportunity to visit this haven of peace.

I was on holiday, based in Rothbury and kept passing the sign for Brinkburn Priory on the road. It had not been on my list of places I wanted to visit but, one late afternoon, on my way back from visiting Warkworth Castle, I saw the sign and thought I may as well have a look. As is often the case with spur-of-the-moment visits, it turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip.
The small but beautiful priory is set in a lush, narrow valley with a shallow, stoney river flowing through it. It is an idyllic and very peaceful spot. The birdlife is abundant and their song, along with the gentle bubbling of the river, create a background of soothing, musical sound.
The priory, as I have said, is small by the standards of religious buildings, but truly is perfectly formed. A real gem. I am not a religious man but there is a quality of cool tranquillity and calming stillness found only in certain religious buildings, the source of which is hard to define but, certainly, is beyond architecture or ornaments. I have never felt this more strongly than at Brinkburn.
Adjacent to the priory is a tudor-style manor house - unfurnished but attractive and all adding to the overall beauty of the property. You can wander through the cavernous rooms if you wish.
There is a small shop with quality gifts and refreshments available and the English Heritage staff are both welcoming and informative.
I loved it here. Highly recommended.

It takes about ten minutes to walk from the small carpark to the priory but it’s a pleasant walk. We had a lovely greeting when we arrived and she explained the background. The dogs were allowed everywhere which makes a change and it was nice not to have to take turns looking after them. Both buildings are interesting for different reasons and it is definitely worth a visit.
I’d check if a wedding is on as we were glad to be leaving when they arrived. It went from appropriate background monastic music in the priory to music blaring out across the site. It also became very busy and the peaceful nature of the site was ruined.

Hello dogfriendlyplaces.
Thank you for your review. English Heritage try to be as friendly to our four-legged friends as possible. They are much a part of your family as the humans.
Here at Brinkburn we are especially fond of them, so do make sure you stop off for a treat the next time you visit.

Its quite a long walk.
My wife has back and knee problems but we, like you, don't have a blue badge. We drove right up to the Priory and spoke to the lady in the office/shop and she let us park.
As this is a small, private site, you are not at risk of being ticketed.

It's about 10 miles. A 2.5 hour walk, although in wedding clothes, probably best to go for the 20 minute drive.
