I joined another couple for the tour around the cocoa estate, led by the estate owner, Nikita.

In a very interactive and personable way she explained to us the whole process of chocolate making right from picking pods (which we did on the grounds!) through drying the beans (we did the ‘cocoa dance’!) to the roasting , stirring and pouring into moulds. We got to create
our own chocolate, which was delicious!

Nikita deserves to do really well with this.

I would recommend it to anyone want to learn more about chocolate, Trinidad history and wouldn’t say ‘no’ to being rewarded with a delicious bar (or two) of delicious local chocolate (after correctly answering Nikita’s questions, of course!)

Wow!! I had a brilliant time visiting ortinola great house with a group of friends this February. Nikita who hosted our group and led the tour was extremely welcoming , friendly and knowledgable . The tour was the perfect mix of information sharing and interactive activities. Nikita really went over and beyond and helped us organise transport home despite there being a countrywide power cut.

We had an absolutely amazing experience at this beautiful place.
People running the estate are so welcoming, friendly and helpful and we have enjoyed every minute of our chocolate making tour.
This place is kids friendly and I would highly recommend it to families. The estate offers quite a unique experience that is at the same time educational, fun and relaxing.

I can't say enough about Russell, his fantastic, family-run cocoa plantation and the delicious chocolate they make there! I spent two fascinating hours in total on this tour, which started with Russell, a former lawyer, explaining the history of cocoa production in Trinidad and Tobago and how he and his family came to own the beautiful Ortinola Estate (a story in itself). I'm warning you - his passion is contagious and the breadth of his knowledge means that he can answer your questions in a way that is easy to understand and brings chocolate to life! I will never look at another bar of chocolate the same way again, although I believe I can only love the 'food of the Gods' more after this tour! After the history lesson in cool, air conditioned comfort, we headed out to the cocoa plantation to see the trees, the drying house, the mountains and the rest of the breathtaking scenery that permeates and surrounds the plantation. Pictures were welcomed (I took a bunch!) and we were able to taste the sweet sop that surrounds the cocoa bean as well as the chocolate that Russell's daughter makes from the cocoa they produce. A wander of the great house is encouraged. All in all I felt like I was visiting family and learning about one of my favourite foods at the same time. I would recommend this tour to anyone willing to explore a historical and architectural gem and to learn about cocoa production in Trinidad. Make sure you wear sneakers! I'll definitely be back.

This was such a lovely experience. The opening "lecture" was the right mix of detail and length so that one was left more knowledgeable than when one had arrived, but not restless from having to sit too long.

The hostess (whose name escapes me) was amiable and enthusiastic and did a very good job of showing us around. The grounds are very beautiful and peaceful with lots of delightful little visual surprises at different points on the estate. The tea was the perfect end to the adventure and was tasty with excellent service. Oh, and the chocolate is delicious!

If you would like to discover what else Trinidad is world renowned for other than its Carnival, beautiful natural beaches and abundant bird life, take a scenic drive into the hinterland of the northern range along the Maracas Royal Road to Ortinola Estate, where you can take a step back to a time when cocoa was king and Cadbury Brothers’ used cocoa beans from the estate to make their famous cocoa powder and chocolate. Surrounded by the jungle clad hills of the northern range, the 140-year-old Ortinola Great House and estate, which was recently restored by a local family, is used not only as a conference/event centre, but also hosts group tours, where the mysteries of how the seeds of a cocoa pod get turned into your favourite chocolate bar are revealed. For a hands-on experience, I highly recommend combining the walk about tour with the chocolate making session at the end, where you not only get to sample the liquid chocolate from the bowl, you also get to take home your very own chocolate bar!
