We stayed two nights in the monastery’s hotel. It was hard to find the hotel initially, perhaps this should be better sign-posted. There was no-one at reception upon arrival either. Our rooms were comfortable, though the hot water did not work and a plumber had to come to fix this. Dinner at the restaurant was delicious in a stunning garden setting, though service was a little slow. We were particularly interested in the abbey’s wines and its prominent place in the history of wine. We tried to book a wine tour for the two of us, but were asked to pay for thirteen other non-existent people as well in order for the tour to take place. This was to accord with their policy of only organising wine-tours for groups of fifteen - quite unlike most other wineries around the world. Instead we took a historic tour of the abbey. This was most enjoyable and the guide was fascinatingly knowledgeable and friendly. To satisfy our love of wine, we bought flights of wines in the wine shop with tasting notes and also walked extensively in the local area - the scenery is very beautiful. On the second night, we dined in a charming traditional restaurant in the local village. It was easy to organise taxis there and back. We then drove to Schloss Johannisburg, where again wine tours were difficult to book (or at least so on the day we planned to visit) so again, bought flights of wines in their shop and strolled around the grounds. There is a significant concert series at Kloster Eberbach, including performances in the enormous abbey itself. Had we discovered this earlier we might well have planned our visit around one of their concerts, which look very good.

Even the parking fee is totally excessive, all day long you don't know what you should do here except go to the overpriced wine shop.
For 16 euros the equipment is a joke when you visit a Scottish castle.
Here you just get ripped off.

I don't know if I would go back. Beautiful on the outside but nothing big inside, an abbey like so many you could say. Among other things, they deign to make a minuscule discount (14€ instead of 16), but the cloister and other rooms are largely occupied by concert equipment or closed for work in progress

The monastery complex is very well preserved and gives a striking impression of monastic life. We received a very detailed and informative guided tour through Werner Rogler, which should have taken another 2 hours (it was about 80 minutes). Through his profound knowledge we have learned a great deal about Eberbach Monastery, the Rheingau and the history of the Middle Ages and modern times. Thanks for that!

This is a largely renovated complex that used to be a cloister. In one room filled with about 25 paintings of serious looking men, one closet and a non-fitting baroc ceiling you get a sense of monks, but that’s it. I liked the room with the grape presses and the graves in the main church but it felt less than I expected. The Steinberger white wine in the vinotec made up for the inconvenience of numerous stairs and uneven floors that a artrose guy doesn’t like. An OK experience but not for a serious detour.

Even if you have already visited the large monastery complex several times, another trip there is definitely worth it, because you discover a few more beautiful details each time. For example, during the current visit (May 29, 2024), three beautiful leaded glass windows were initially installed on a trial basis in a side wing. Their colors give the church a special radiance. Whether they will be installed permanently will be decided after evaluation of votes, the results of which should be available in June 2024. It would be nice if this project were not the only one, but more such windows were installed permanently.

We visited this monastery because of its history, its connection with the movie "The name of the rose", and its vicinity to the Schloss Johannisburg - which was our main destination. The place could not make us recall any scene of the film and touring the whole place took less than an hour. The winemaking history dating back many centuries was reflected in the presence of many, many old barrels, but nowadays the wine is made elsewhere. Nevertheless, it is still a working monastery and the attached shop did have some interesting items.

Very disappointed. Nice to look at from the outside. Bare, empty rooms inside.
€16 too expensive. Playmobil exhibition in the upper rooms. Extra cost €16.
I wouldn't do it again.

My wife and I joined some friends for a wine festival in this part of Germany. Our bed and breakfast was near this Kloster. We really enjoyed touring it although we thought the layout could have been better. The tour did come with an audio guide that helped, but the numbers didn't always match the next area. Still the grounds are beautiful complete with a farm, old wine making equipment, original windows from of old, and more. The Kloster was used in a couple movies. The best part comes at the end with the opportunity to do a wine tasting. We did and came home with six bottles. All in all, this Kloster is very worthwhile and makes a nice half day trip.

The monastery buildings and grounds are really great and we were already impressed on our first visit.
This time, however, we had booked a special tour of the filming of "The Name of the Rose" there and it was just awful! It started off quite nicely with a glass of wine in the wine cellar and a few interesting anecdotes about the filming. But after that, there was hardly any reference to the film and the little that was said was also hair-raisingly incorrect. Since we know the film well, we were skeptical on site and after watching the film again afterwards, we were simply appalled by the many incorrect representations. The tour guide clearly has hardly any knowledge of the film herself, you just can't offer that. There were also no illustrations, as we know from other themed tours - probably because this would have revealed the many errors. And we had expected specialist knowledge and special insights from a special tour!
Unfortunately, the money for the special tour was completely wasted, we are extremely disappointed and cannot recommend this tour to fans of the film at all.

Hi I don't see any wine tours/tasting on April 16th. I know that the monastery is open that day, would there still be any tasting available that one can purchase at that time? Thanks!
Đã viết vào 9 tháng 3, 2019
Hope this is in time. Yes. If the monastery is open, the wine shop/tasting room is ALSO open. When we visited the poured wine until after closing hours while we waited for a taxi to take us back to Eltville.
