The bus ride from Hanoi was over ride was over a bumpy “National Highway” (we are now down to two lands from four) as we travel through this mountainous rich agricultural territory of the Mai Chau Valley.
This village consists of around 300 individuals, 70% of whom work in the tourist industry, and the remaining work in the fields. There are other villages nearby. Most live in these stilt houses.
The area gets around 60 inches of rain between July and September. A family harvests enough rice off of ½ acre of land to satisfy all their needs (where they get two crops a year = rice takes about 4 months to mature). The land is leased from the government for 99 years, and the leas is totally transferable.
Again, the White Thai live in raised (stilt) structures. The reasoning for the raised structures goes way back with the following reasoning:
• Years ago, there was a lot of wildlife, and up high was to stay away from such.
• They used to Thai their water buffalo to the stilts (something like a barn area). Note even today due to the small size of individual farm plots, mechanical tractors for a given family is impractical, thus Water buffalo are still used to plow some of the rice paddies.
• Thai people DO NOT like to live on the ground.
• The space under the living quarters is used for funeral preparations (very important).
As we arrived, we now understood how we would spend the night in a separate structure of this multi-generational farming family. The sleeping arrangements were somewhat rustic as we slept on a futon-style floor mattress and shared bath Facilities. I would call this something like a hostel arrangement (wow great ice breaker at getting really close to strangers who will soon become great friends).
The three girls are in one building. and us two married couples are in the second building.
The building we are in could accommodate 5 couples (5 futon mattress), but with just the two couples we have LOTS of room. For added comfort Yvonn and I stacked two Futons (mattresses) atop one another, and sleep quite well.
At first, I had no hinge rating for the accommodation as there was nothing that came to mind to compare the accommodations outside of a Hostel environment to compare it to. The closest building (structural-wise) we could compare it to, was the Safari tents we stayed in Africa, lodges in the Amazon, and When Pete and I experienced on our WWII diving expedition stay on Peleliu (when we were in grass huts with metal roofs and the coconuts dropping on the roof woke us up at night). Then I remembered Yvonne and I spending our nights on the island of Yapp, and sure enough this environment matched up nicely with such so we are giving this accommodation a Hinge Rating as a comparison (New format of structural only) as our first Hostel environment, thus giving it a preliminary hinge rating of 4.2
The accommodations are of traditional thatch-roofed homes way up on stilts, with air-conditioning for us foreigners.
Woke up at 1 AM as the first roosters started to crow, so we put in ear plugs and fell back to sleep.
Up at 5 AM. Went down under the stilt house, and started logging what I think we observed yesterday (yes, I did take notes). The roosters did not stop their crows all day long, and then the geese started their cackling around 6 AM.
Well at least last night we did not have to wait for a coconut (HA HA = no coconuts here) to fall on the roof.
Our Homestead family house consists of 4 guest accommodation rooms. Eight other families in the village are also offering tourist accommodation.
During the pandemic our homestead family decided to put in a 15 X 30 ft tiled swimming pool for the tourist, SO with the village children not able to go to school, they invited the kids to come to the pool to learn how to swim, as it turns out in the past a number of children had drowned in the various water features (because they did NOT know how to swim).
