Excellent place for a budget holiday in The Maldives

Maafushi Island is located about 45 mins away by speed boat from Male Intl Airport. It's a v small island which can be covered in about an hour's time of evening stroll. Tourist locations are restricted to 1 side of the island as the other side has a prison but there are no concerns with regards to tourist safety. It's a beautiful island having excellent vistas. It has 2 beaches: a public beach and a bikini beach. Maldives being primarily a muslim country, wearing bikini anywhere on the entire island in public is prohibited except for the specially designated bikini beach. Alcohol is also prohibited which is a major let down especially considering there are restaurants with outdoor seating and give off a great Goa-like beach place vibe. So for those who would like to have drinks in the evening, the only option available is on a Safari Boat (a.k.a. Floating Bar) which one can access via a small boat from the ferry terminal post 7pm. Biggest disadvantage is that boarding and dis-embarking from that small boat can be challenging for certain people especially during low tide. The main street of Maafushi has many hotels, restaurants and establishments offering island day tours and water activities. We visited during the FIFA WC and noticed that many restaurants had put up big screens for their customers to enjoy the matches while having their meals. This place can be considered by people who want to visit The Maldives but are restricted by the exorbitant cost of staying in any of the other Island Resorts. They can still experience an Island Resort while staying at Maafushi Island by taking any of the Island day tours. Restaurants attached to hotels charge in USD whereas stand-alone restaurants charge in local currency (MVR). USD is a widely accepted currency here primarily for buying touristy things. Beaches are clean with clear pristine waters. It can get extremely hot during the day as it's a place primarily with a tropical climate. Goes without saying that one must carry a good quality sunscreen lotion. Since beaches are full of corals and stones, coral shoes are recommended. Hotel stay recommendation: Arena Hotel / Kaani Hotel / Triton all of which have unobstructed beach-facing views.…
