We decided to take a road trip from El Cajon, Ca to Kings Canyon National Park, but wanted to take the Polaris and ride some new trails, so we booked four nights, after 2 nights at Kings Canyon. Eshom Campground has an OHV Stanging area a few miles from the park. It was quite, it was in the low eights during the day, around 81, and at night around 65-70. Small park, about 25 spaces spread out. Not crowded at all. Perfect. NOTE: While they dont have BEAR BOXES for your food, be sure to clean up your area and put your food safe at night. I was told that there were bears around, and every morning I saw the trash cans knocked over. :) bring your bear spray, and air horn just in case. Oh, no showers, so bring your own. :) (NO FIRES) Only propane use. We know that going, so we can ready. Last thing, its a long long drive up the mountain, and the Camp host told me that the little Christian Camping living area that you pass coming up the mountain, they dont mind if you swim in their lake. (Just be sure to ask first).

I took a friend who had never been camping before to this spot and she LOVED it. It was for her birthday so I wanted to do somewhere unique and beautiful. The gentleman who is the ranger there is amazingly friendly and knows everything about the area. There is a massive field you can see the stars for miles at night; the field also takes you to a path in the day to a waterfall that you can actually swim in! It was so gorgeous, I tell everyone how amazing this spot is. Then we took the back road into the actual Sequoia National Forest and the road into it was so fun and awesome!

This is a nice, quiet campground, far away from the crowds at Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks. It is well-maintained with nicely wooded sites. It is, however, about an hour and a half to the parks, meaning it's also that far away from any supplies you might have forgotten. While there is a "shortcut" road that can shave time off a trip to the national parks, it is an unpaved, bumpy road. Do not attempt it in an RV, van or regular vehicle. Be sure you've got at least all-wheel drive and preferably higher clearance than a standard car. Even then, it is very slow going. We drove it once, nearly got stuck in an SUV and opted to take the longer way from then on.

Read other people's reviews about directions to the site and it's not going to be too bad. This entire campground is lovely but the magical spots are the group sites. My kids (6, 5 and 2) played in the picturesque creek for hours. Also, there were no bugs at this site! How is that even possible? We asked about poison oak and the camp host, Steve, informed us that it had all been cleared. tip #1: a ton of trees were felled to help with a bark beetle problem so bring your hatchet and you will have all the free wood you can possibly imagine. The group sites are sitting on most of it, the single sites didnt have much so maybe bring a wagon or something to fetch some is you are at a single site. tip#2: there is a shortcut road from Eshom to Kings Canyon Park (where you can see glorious gigantic trees--I mean they are insane!) that will cut the 1 hr 45 min drive to a measly 40 minutes! This is an unpaved road and it is a really beautiful drive but its best if you have a car/truck that is higher off the ground. Some of the rocks in the road and divots from water run-off were quite deep. Steve will direct you about the road but it also shows up on Google maps.

first thing: THE ADDRESS LISTED ON TRIPADVISOR IS NOT FOR THE CAMPGROUND, IT'S THE MAILING ADDRESS FOR CORRESPONDENCE. DO NOT USE THIS ADDRESS. THE CAMPGROUND IS LOCATED HERE: GPS Info. (Latitude, Longitude): 36.6891, -118.9504 36°41'21"N, 118°57'1"W this is a wonderful campground, very much off the beaten path, with only 24 sites (23 + the host's site), nestled in the sequoia national forest, about 45 minutes from grant cove and the general grant tree at sequoia national park. the sites have pit toilets and drinkable, spring-fed spigots. the facilities are immaculate, thanks to the campground's host, steve, who is certainly the best campground host i've come across. never met a more helpful, engaging, conscientious host. just a great guy. some of the sites are close together--which is nice if you've got a group spread across multiple sites--while others are tucked away from everyone else. there are single and double lots, which all have fire pits and picnic tables. there are NO bear boxes, which is a bummer, as it requires you to put all your food and food-related stuff in your car at night. steve will give you the rundown when you arrive. there's a creek running alongside the grounds, as well as an amazing boomerang-shaped meadow that spreads south from the campground. beyond the meadow are a couple of easy hikes to a 25-ft waterfall and some really neat granite indian mortar holes. a previous reviewer mentioned poison ivy, but considering the elevation (approx 4800 ft) and the location (california), it's highly unlikely that what the reviewer saw was poison ivy. we didn't see any poison ivy or oak. we saw mosquitos, though. and wild strawberries. and lots of beautiful trees. bonus: if you have verizon mobile service, you'll have coverage in the park. and if you don't, ask steve and he may just give you the baseball score you're looking for.
