I always see the great deco sign near the Harrisburg train station and thought it might be a cool place for a cool retro lunch. So last trip I had an hour to connect in Harrisburg and I stopped in for lunch. It's not retro - it's just old, dark and dirty. I was the only person in here for lunch at noon - that should have told me something! My waitress came up to my table in a filthy dirty t shirt and jeans. I had pork and sauerkraut. The restaurant's head cook walked with me to ensure my nightime safety in the neighborhood per ownership's request, & he was a fascinating conversationalist. The restaurant & grocery are street level. The Alva serves wonderful food at a very reasonable price. Hotel rooms are upstairs (no handicap access). This establishment is located right next to the Amtrak station, and truly caters to all walks of life. Weekly/monthly rates are available. One night's stay costs $40. The full-sz'd bed was clean & comfy, providing the best night's sleep of my excursion.
