We actually walked here from the train station (about 5 km) as it was one of the few hotels that showed up on GPS. We literally needed somewhere to sleep and nothing else. It was clean enough but tired looking - I found a wardrobey-shelf thingy mildly offensive as it was mouldy, splintery and totally unnecessary - but comfortable enough to do the job. It was cheap, not cheerful, but functional. Somewhere to sleep, nothing more.

On 31 December 2006, we took the SE5 train from Ninh Binh at 15:15 and reached Dong Hoi Train Station about 10:45pm the same day. We ate pho (Vietnamese noodle) near the station and hired 2 motorcycle men to take us to town which was 3km away. They brought us to 2, 3 hotels / guesthouses. We desperately took Luong Thuc Hotel as it looked better than the others and the location looked more central. The town was dark and it was very late with little rain so we couldn’t see many options. The door to Reception Room which was on the front street was locked so the man helped call them by using the car entrance. We took the room on the 2nd floor in their better wing at VND140,000 (US$8.70) with no breakfast. They said the other wing has worse rooms. It was a 3.3m x 4.5m room excluding toilet space. The toilet floor 2m x 2m was very new and clean. The basin was very clean too. Hot water was an indirect tank so we needed to wait for it to boil before taking a shower. No bath tub. There were 3 sets of toothbrush, 1 comb, 1 shampoo bottle and 3 small bath towels, 3 pairs of plastic slippers, 1 double bed and 1 single bed, 1 tea table and 2 chairs, 1 free local big tea bag, 1 jar and 2 cups, 1 bottle to keep hot water for making tea. 2 lamps on the wall didn’t work. There was a socket on the same wall but it didn’t work so I unplugged the refrigerator to charge my camera batteries. The next day I saw the socket near the door at the same place where we turned the air conditioner on and off. The door and window curtains covered it. Here was the biggest problem: the 3 pillows and blankets had full smell of previous people and the hotel did not wash before letting us use. The bed was a nightmare. It left a hole where we slept on. Miss Van at Reception was a cheerful girl who spoke a little English. One male staff looked very plain i.e., he didn’t know how to smile when answering us. They gave us a free late check out at 3:30pm. We went to the World Natural Heritage Site Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park since 9am. When we came back, we asked the motorcycle men to take us to see the Nhat Le Beach, 3km from the hotel. There was a river, a park, a bridge and hotels just a few blocks from Luong Thuc Hotel which we didn’t see the previous night. We rushed back to our hotel. They already cleaned our room, put all our stuff in bags and set up the room to be ready for new guests. They said “Sorry for cleaning your room”. We quickly used the toilet, took our things, came down to check out and crossed the street to take a public bus to Hue. …
